Be Prepared...
When a smoke alarm sounds will your family be prepared?
According to the National Fire Protection Association only 23% of households have actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan to ensure they could escape quickly and safely.
Develop a plan:
1. Draw a map of your home, include doors and windows in the illustration.
2. Identify at least two exits for each room.
3. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.
4. Agree on a meeting area outside.
5. Teach children to never enter a burning building, not even to rescue a pet.
6. Have your family practice escaping from different rooms.
7. Have working smoke alarms installed outside every sleeping area and on each level of your home.
Special tips for children:
- Firefighters in full gear can sometimes appear scary to smaller children causing them to hide during a fire. Arrange to take a tour of your local fire station, so that they can see that firefighters are not scary and are there to help them.
- Teach children to crawl down low below the smoke and to feel the door for heat before opening it.
