Rogue Valley Fire Prevention

Fundamentals of Fire

There are certain factors that always hold true concerning fire behavior:

Fire needs three fundamental elements to occur:

  • Fuel
  • Oxygen
  • Heat

If you remove any one of these three elements, the fire will go out-- of fail to begin in the first place.

Fire behavior/movement is controlled by elements in the environment.  It is influenced by:

  • Available Fuel
  • Weather Factors (such as sun and wind)
  • Topography (slope, valleys, canyons, etc.)

Combustion, or burning of fuels, occurs when an object or objects come into direct contact with flames, or when fuels are exposed to intense amounts of radiant heat from a flame source.
