Open pile- or burn barrel-burning are not the only options available for woody debris disposal around your home. Their are a number of other options that do not involve burning at all. Some are listed below:
Chipping:
Chipping is an aesthetically pleasing method of debris disposal. Wood chips, when spread a few inches deep, do not pose much of a fire hazard, and can also be used as mulch (which will act to inhibit the growth of weeds).
Haul Away:
Individuals can load up woody debris and haul them off to dump-sites or biomass power facilities. There are several sites located here in Jackson county (follow the links below). Haul-away is a rather labor-intensive method of waste disposal, however, and is best-suited for small areas with good vehicle access.
