Fuel Reduction Around Structure

Required on new construction and development, replacement, or substantial improvement of existing structures

 

Size Of Fuel Break

100-150 feet:  A 100 ft fuel-break is required.  When slope abutting any structure exceeds 20%,  an additional 50 ft break  must be added 

 

Dead Vegetation

Remove all

 

Dry Grass Maximum Height

4 inches

 

Tree Pruning

Limbs below 8’ are to be removed (exempted are live fruit trees)

 

Tree Thinning

At least 15 feet between crowns

 

Shrubs

Small trees and brush growing beneath trees should be removed

 

Plant Species

Fire-resistant plants should be used in landscaping

 

Vegetation Overhanging Structure

No limbs are to touch a structure, or overhang a roof

 

Chimney & Stovepipe Clearance

No limbs are to be within 15’ of a chimney or stovepipe

 

Firewood, Lumber Piles & Other Flammables

Open firewood storage shall not occur within 30’ from structures

 

Exterior Decks

Areas under porches, decks and balconies 3' or less above the ground shall be  enclosed with 1/4" or smaller, non-combustible, corrosion-resistant metal mesh.  Areas under decks, porches, etc., greater than 3' shall be free of combustible materials.

 

Along Driveway

Vegetation shall be cleared to a height of 13.5 feet. Two-foot strips shall line both sides of the drive; these strips shall match the characteristics of the previously mentioned fuel break/safety zone areas, provided, however, that the vegetation in these areas cannot exceed 6” in height.  Driveways shall be 12’ wide on straight sections and 14’ wide in the curves.
