In the event of a wilderness fire, there are often times no roads for fire-engines or other ground vehicles to gain access through. In such a case, firefighters known as rappellers will utilize helicopters to rappel (anywhere from 2-16 individuals) into the wildfire. Once on the ground, these fire-fighters will either take suppressive action or, if the fire is too large, clear a helispot for the later arrival of hotshot crews.
Rappellers are highly trained fire-fighters. On their person they carry 30 lbs. of fire gear, and may be expected to transport up to 300 lbs. of fire gear lowered to them from their transport helicopter. Rappell distances range from 30-250 feet.
Once their assigned fires are officially out, a rappel crew has two options—cut a helispot and leave by helicopter, or hike from 2-7 miles to the nearest road with all their gear in tow (weighing up to 98 lbs.).
