Smoke Jumpers
The first smoke jump occurred in 1940 in Idaho’s Nez Perce National Forest.
Jumpers are utilized in situations involving initial attack
on wildfire located in remote areas.
Once on the ground, these fire-fighters have enough tools and
supplies to be self-sufficient for 48 hours.
Smoke Jumpers are highly trained
professionals. They
must maintain a high level of physical fitness to perform extremely
arduous duties. Jumpers
must also possess a high degree of “emotional stability and mental
awareness.”
Jumpers are a national resource.
From June to October, they travel to states all over the
country, including Alaska.
